Jenna Dewan Tatum Spills the Secrets to Her Absolutely Perfect Hair

Lipstick: Our readers are obsessed with your haircut. What secrets can you spill?
Jenna Dewan Tatum: “Jen Atkin and her magical scissors is what it is. I had long hair my entire life, and I had every color hair, but it was always long hair. I think it was when Witches of East End was canceled, and I had time for the first time. I think I was like. ‘I just want something new,’ and now it keeps inching and inching shorter every month.”

Lipstick: So how short will you go?
JDT: “I think I can go a tiny bit shorter, but after that, I don’t know. I enjoy the movement, and I can’t have a haircut that I have to “do.” So if I can’t wake up, shower and have it lay right, I won’t do it.”

Lipstick: How do you style it?
JDT: “You’re going to hate me. Generally I shower or use dry shampoo, and it lays like this because it’s such a good cut. It just lays nice. I have wavy hair, so it just falls into place, but it’s way easier than long hair. It’s so nice! It’s a nice, fresh, new thing…it just gives you a new energy.”

Lipstick: Would you ever go back to long hair?
JDT: “Not at the moment, although maybe for a role. There’s certain things I love about long hair, and I’m such a girl. I’m a Texan, and I love long, pretty, wavy hair, but it’s harder. This is so much easier for me. I have thick hair, so Jen kind of cuts into it and makes sure it’s layered quite a bit.”

Lipstick: Any trends or looks you wish you wouldn’t have been so scared to try?
JDT: “I was a little bit afraid of having short hair, because when you have long hair, it sort of becomes a crutch. I was always like, “No, no, no, no” and I thought a lot of the roles I was getting or responding to was because they liked my long hair. But then I decided, “I’m going to do what I want to do, and the universe will line up” and it did. So I sort of like that attitude! [Laughs] And if they want it long, there’s some serious hair magic I can do. Wigs, falls…falls are my favorite things in the world. I’m such a closet drag queen!”

Lipstick: Do you ever watch old clips of you dancing and think, “Oh gosh, why did I go for that look?”
JDT: “Oh yes! My dancer hair and makeup choices were sometimes epic…I had pink, Rainbow Brite hair for a long time. And glitter eyeliner! Although I’m still asking people all the time if I can wear glitter. We did the Lip Sync Battle and I got to wear glitter!”

Starting over isn't easy, especially for small-town guy John Nolan, who, after a life-altering incident, is pursuing his dream of becoming an LAPD officer. As the force's oldest rookie, he's met with skepticism from some higher-ups who see him as just a walking midlife crisis. If he can't keep up with the young cops and the criminals, he'll be risking lives -- including his own -- but if he can use his life experience, determination and sense of humour to give him an edge, he may just become successful in this new chapter of his life.

Quoting Jenna

“I had danced with Janet Jackson and P. Diddy so I had done a bunch of hip hop. Really and truly my roots are in modern and ballet but, professionally, that’s not really out there any more, unfortunately, so these artists aren’t really having a lot of ballet dancers behind them so I had to learn hip hop really quick.”
